I bought the Kindle version of this book. I've started to flip through it and read sections here and there. I bought it because my friend in Austria plans to take a trip to Rome next month in May to see the new Pope Francis. But it's also very nostalgic. Just a few year ago when I was in high school my grandmother paid for my family to take a trip to Italy and Rome. It seems that little has changed despite the fact that Italy now uses the euro and is part of the EU. Apparently Romans still drive on the sidewalk. You'd better watch out. I remember having to flee out of the path of an oncoming tiny little Fiat. Also you can easily get lost in the maze-like streets of Rome. It always reminded me of a Fellini movie. And according to this guide it still does. So ideally you need more than this guide and a map. You need to know someone in the city who can guide you and give you a tour. But then I remember the taxi driver who kept the meter running while he took a circuitous path back to our hotel while he tried to sell us on his brother taking us to Pompeii the next day. I just got back from Rome and this book gave the impression that the author hadn't been there for years. I recommend going in January to avoid the wall-to-wall crowds and lineups that are off-putting by mid-March. Rome is dense with palm and orange trees so it can't get that cold in the winter.
The express train from the Fiumicino airport to the Termini is now 14 Euros per person plus a distant transfer at the Termini, making a taxi the best way to go for two people. Admission to the Roman Forum, Colusseum and Palantine Hill is currently a two-day pass and only allows ONE entry to the Colisseum. Try Grayline day trips and tours (not mentioned in the Frommer's). Use Tripadvisor dot com to find more economical accommodation. The best map is a tear-off tourist sheet currently available at most hotels. The ancient street-level access to the Imperial Forums appears to have been closed for years.
Obviously, I was pretty disappointed with the practicality, accuracy, thoroughness and helpfulness of this book.
This is a wonderful book & will help us very much when we take our trip to Rome. Good pricing.
I must not have read the description well... this was from at least 10 years ago. So funny, they were still anticipating the coming of the Euro. Historical information is still good.
Book came with the map missing
This book calls Caravaggio's masterpiece "The Calling of St Matthew" in the church of San Luigi del Francesi a fresco, which it is not. If it gets details like this wrong how many other things are incorrect? It also omits some great masterpieces. No mention is made of Santa Maria della Vittoria which houses Bernini's masterpiece "The Ecstasy of St Theresa" or Santa Maria degli Angeli which Michelangelo converted from the tepidarium of the Diocletian Baths. If you are interested in art go with the Fodor's guide - it also has photographs.
Outside of asking someone in Rome, this book has maps a plenty, lists of great places to eat, and decent hotel recommendations. I could have used a more extensive list, but go online for that. Site-seeing was made easy, and some things pointed out by the authors really were spectacular. Day trips section was awesome; told me exactly what I needed to do and it worked perfectly, got me to the beach and the ruins without a problem. This is a great starting point for any trip, or lone source, but go online and you'll have all you need to get your trip planned, and learn some cool things about the places you visit.
I bought this book to prepare for an upcoming trip to Rome. It has some good sections. I like the inclusions of breaking down the hotels, shopping, and eating by sections of the city and by expense. However, I found that I was always flipping back and forth between chapters to get the full explanation of the main attractions. It was somewhat confusing and distracting. There were only a few pictures located at the beginning of the book. More pictures would have been a nice addition. There is a pullout color map in the back. This has been helpful in some planning aspects but lacking in some things I have tried to find. All in all, It was a good first book to try, but I will probably find another book to use during the trip.
